Closed the account 26 days after the initial deposit and 12 days after the checked bounced. Did not find out the checked bounced until 3 weeks after I had already closed the account. Now the banks wants the money back

The only reason we found out was we had tocalle the bank in December. Where is the consumer protection?

I know its "bad news", but, yes you will have to pay the money back, (if the check bounced).
Next time, I can only advise you, to ask for "a fast clearance", it costs a fee, but it is worth it.
Also; you may ask the bank concerned, (can they place a bank warrant on the offender), in other words, the person who wrote the bouncing check.
#hope this helps you, merry christmas.

They did let you know.

And even if they told you the day they found out, they would still want their money back.

But because you closed the account, and were no longer a customer it would take the bank a little longer to contact you because the rules for notifying a non-bank customer are different from notifying someone with an open account in good standing.

You spent the money from the bad check, you owe the bank the money back and then you need to re-collect it from whomever gave you the bad check.

Unfortunately, yes. If you close the account and have an outstanding check, you will have to pay it back. It is normally your responsibility to COVER any check that you write....whether it be keeping your account open until it clears, or having enough money in an open account to cover it.

Because you closed the account before it cleared does not resolve you of the responsibility of making good on the check.
