Remember, anyone with clinical depression (as opposed to situational depression) has a problem with brain chemistry. The antidepressant is supposed to balance the chemistry. Of course, it doesn't work that way for everyone. (Unfortunately, that is the case with ALL medications.) Sometimes the chemicals become even more unbalanced--causing the depression to worsen. Just like some blood pressure pills can make your BP worse, etc. So if you do notice that your depression has worsened you have to call your doctor immediately. There are many types of antidepressants...they just have to find the right one for each person.

I have taken antidepressants, but never those, and I never had suicidal thoughts from the medication. Mine were Lexapro, 5-HTP, Wellbutrin, and Lithium (not all at once!). My friend did take Prozac and she also never had suicidal thoughts. It makes sense though because I take antidepressants for anxiety and when I first started taking it, it increased my anxiety (how ironic) until my body adjusted to it. I don't see why suicidal thoughts coming from an SSRI would affect teens any more than adults, so it makes sense it would occur in both.

When I was on the Paxil, the only negative side effect I experienced was when I ran out of pills. If I had to go even just one day without a dose I was a complete nauseous, dizzy, wreck. I read an article in some medicine magazine that suggested Paxil was addictive. I believe it. So, I hope this doesn't happen to you.

Yes, some anti-depressants can actually cause the depression to get worse. Which is why some people are switched from medication to medication until they find something that works for them. Or from dose to dose.
This isn't a new thing, and if you have a decent doctor, they'll warn you of this before you start the course.
When you start a new anti-depressant, you need to be aware of any changes in your mood, for the worse or the better. You should keep a record of all the side-effects you experience.

From what I've studied and learned about depression and anti-depressants, the drug doesn't necessarily make you have suicidal thoughts. In many extremely depressed people, there is such a lack of motivation that suicide isn't even a viable option to them. However, once they begin taking anti-depressants, the drug actually begins to work and starts elevating them, HOWEVER, without proper therapy and counseling along with these medications, because of the heightened states of motivation, there is a possibility that thoughts of suicide will occur. Thats why its never advised to be on an anti-depressant without having regular counseling sessions. At least thats one of the theories they taught us in Psych.

YES! I had a problem several years ago after a week of taking Paxil CR, and I was 22. There are different theories as to why it happens, but no one really knows for sure.
When starting a new mental health medication, you should try to monitor your condition (or ask someone who can monitor you, like a parent, spouse, etc.) and CALL YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you have thoughts of harming yourself!

I haven't heard that so much as that it can cause an increase in the suicidal thoughts in children. Scary.

I have taken these, and never had any problems. Most people are already having suicidal thoughts by the time they are on them.
