this is pissing me off. I adopted a puppy from a shelter. He made dog #4. I live a mini farm and 5 acres. Well, pup stayed in the house with us. But, happened to get out with my girls when they were going to catch the bus. My other 3 dogs are outside dogs. They always accompany my daughters to the bus and meet them when they get off. Our yard is the bus stop. So there are several children that wait on our property for the bus to arrive. Some parents park and wait for the bus with their children. Well, when pup followed the girls with my other dogs, he came up missing. I searched and searched. One of my older daughters friends that catch a later bus called me a few days later and asked if we had a pup. I said yes. She said that seen one of the parents that wait in my yard take the pup. I confronted the parent and she denied taking it. I want my dog back. What can I do?

Now the shelter is writing to check on the puppy. I am so ashamed to tell them that he is missing :(

yea I would call the sheriff except for the fact that I have no idea where this woman lives. Perhaps, I'll follow her tomorrow.

if you follow her tommorow then write down the address to her house. then confront her again and if she still said no then at night look around at her house and see if your pup is in there. if you dont see the pup then call the sherriff. but if you do see your pup then call the sherriff and tell them they stole your pup. if you have more questions about this just email me at

Call your local sheriff, file a report with them and then they can go to the Lady's house once they find out whats going on. If you have a picture of you and the dog together that would help or papers. also make the witness really available to the sheriff, IE, telephone number, address. Most dogs have a tiny chip inserted under their skin, if they came from a shelter. The shelter could provide you with the i.d. number if the dog if it has this. I hate to hear about this as a dog lover, I hope you get the pup back. If the sheriff cannot find the dog do an indirect surveillance on the house. The dog is bound to come out side eventually, then you can have video proof that the woman is in possession of the dog.

First.. Contact the police! Tell them the story, show them your papers from the shelter, give them the name of the friend who called and told you the woman took the pup.

Second.. The police can wait at the bus stop and accompany the woman to her house to look for the pup. It is not legal for you to do that.

Third.. DO NOT tell the woman you are doing this, she can hide the pup away from her house until the police leave!

If you want to be sneaky, follow at a distance when they go to her house. In the event they don't find the pup you can observe from a distance and take pictures of the pup at her house if you see it. After all, she would have to take it out for potty time. ;>)

Then take the pictures to the police.

Call the shelter and tell them what happened, they know what the dog looks like and it's probably microchipped or tattooed, or they'll at least remember her, and you have the paperwork, they can call the police and search the woman's house, if they find the dog it'll be returned to you and the woman will get arrested, this is your best option and you should act fast before they try to get it registered in their name some how!!

Oh, if you know her name or even if you don't, the police can get in touch with the school. Schools generally know all the kids that get on at a certain stop, and they can just as easily investigate every household in your area that has a child at that school if you don't know her name. If you know her name, the school has her address and the police can make them give it to them. They CAN find her, but you must call them soon!

I guess if you have papers saying that you are the owner, you can call the police and have they pay the parents a visit. It should be easy enough to find out if they have a new dog or not.

Don't tell the shelter anything yet, not until you find out if the other parents have the dog or not. Eventually, you may have to fess up to the shelter, but for right now, don't jump the gun.

Call the sheriff anyway. It won't be hard, only certain amount of kids at that time at that stop it is their JOB to find her. It is NOT yours, you don't even know if this woman is stable mentally. Or if she would report you for harassment. Plus that would alert her that you were planning to take action. Can you describe her car? They will ask your friends daughter questions as well, they can trace her down. Alert the shelter because she may decide to dump the dog to get rid of the evidence. The shelter needs to know that you weren't the one to dump it. So if it turns up that way you can get it back.

Call the police. Once they show up on the lady's porch, she may decide it's not worth the trouble and hand over the puppy. Be prepared to show the police any proof or offer any witnesses that the pup belongs to you so they're willing to help you get it back.

Call the police and have your adoption papers in hand, the police should go talk to the person in question. And give the papers or copies to show the other person, hopefully if they have a concience they will give the puppy back with no problems.

My brother had a similar experience. He once had a puppy when he was a kid, then one day he turned up missing. They found him in a neighbor's house. They confronted them, but they refused to admit it and open the gate. Follow her. See if it's your dog. If it is, and if it recognizes you, SLAP her.
