dress up in wedding gowns and veils during their first communion? I would never let my daughter do this. It just looks creepy to me. I mean, it looks as though they are *literally* marrying christ. Isn't 2nd grade a little young?

PS. - Don't bash me, I used to be catholic.

It is not a wedding gown. And receiving First Communion is not Marriage to Christ. It is receiving His Body and Blood, but is no way, shape or form similar to the Sacrament of Marriage.

But it seems you didn't really want that information. You've already made up your mind.

And by the way, unless you've been excommunicated from the Church, if you were baptized Catholic you are still Catholic, only not in Full Communion with the Church.

You see, during special ocasion, we all dress up our best because it is only once in a life time.

Somehow, it is to the common norm to view the wedding gown as the most beautiful dress of all... and I'm still wondering why.

Anything related to Church is to do with purity, holiness, white without stain. As it symbolized what we ought to be before God our creator, we dress up in white.

So, I guess... what better dress is there to wear but to "kill two birds with one stone" when we dress little children with white gowns which is both

1. supposed to be the most beautiful dress
2. dress which are white in colour.

Marrying to Christ. I like that idea. It is a communion between God and Man. That's where we belong, that's where we are supposed to be.

Let's understand what does communion really means?

1. How happy are you? Christ said, happy are those who are meek and humble for they will be called children of God. Imagine, just people calling them names will make them happy. What more if you and God are united?
2. Christ said: Abide in me and I will abide in you. Whatever you ask the Father in my name, it shall be done for you. Communion means abiding in Jesus Christ.
3.

PS. Catholics do not bash. They melts you with love as Christ loves.

Those point that I said above may not be extremely precise word by word according to the bible but it's just what came out of my head.

My best friend was Catholic as a kid. I was so jealous when she got her "wedding dress"
Here's what is creepy, I went to a roman Catholic wedding at a very old church. They had these statues of Mary and I don't know who else that were huge and they hung from the ceiling over us! If I were a kid that would creep me out!
Then the bride and groom lit candles while kneeling in front of a statue of Mary and asked HER to bless them...You tell me what is wrong with this picture!

Hi, I am Catholic and I tend to agree with you,I think the parents of most of these girls go way overboard, in quite a few chapels the order of the day is that the girls wear their own clothes but are provided with a white over-gown that symbolizes their purity.
But I have witnessed kids getting out of stretch limousines wearing designer dresses and with tiaras, honestly one girl I remember had a flashing tiara,God help us.

Ahhh! They are so sweet and so cute. Little persons seem to have a better perspective on life and love than us older persons. My 7yr old niece is always telling me that I was the best thing she had when she was born and she doesn't know what should would ever do without me. It brings tears to my eyes.. :-)))

Guess is a marketing strategy to put in little girls' minds the idea of being nuns or at least have a church wedding in a white dress...

It's a rite of passage. Is it bah mitzvah creepy?

These kids give up there Saturdays to complete a class about God, so let 'em have the party dress and cake. There's worse things for a child to be doing.

not going to " bash " anyone for you have the free will to believe as you do. however, personally don't think there is anything wrong with this as this is a custom / tradition which helps unite the Catholic Church. have no problem with these ceremonies and I respect the customs, traditions, rituals and ceremonies of any and all Religions.
