Confectioner's sugar, powdered sugar, & icing sugar are all the same thing. What it's called depends mainly on where you're from.

Well, I guess by now you should have an idea. There have been times I have substituted regular sugar when I not have confectioner/powdered sugar. Usually the texture will not be as smooth when you use Granulated. I not say it work for every recipe, as I will use what it calls for IF I have it. IF, it something we just playing around for some kids and really not want to drive just for one thing, I sub the granulated and hope for the best. When it an important deal to me I always make sure I have everything I need before I start.
IF, you need to be Techinical I found this and a little explain in that link.
"Substitutes: Mix 1 cup granulated sugar plus 1 tablespoon corn starch in blender until powdery".

Confectioners sugar is a powdery substance. It's also known as powdered sugar. You will find it next to regular sugar at your grocers. Stick with the confectioners sugar for your recipes.

Confectioners sugar is powdered form, not granulated. You can make your own using regular sugar, by putting regular sugar into a blender and processing it. But that takes a really long time. It is much easier to just buy it---plus it is cheaper than regular sugar

Confectioner's sugar is powdered sugar--it's cut with corn starch. No, you cannot sub that with regular sugar. Just go get some-it costs less than a dollar a bag.

Glossy Chocolate Sour Cream Frosting 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips 3/4 sour cream 2 cups powdered sugar 1 tsp vanilla Melt chocolate chips in top of double boiler over hot, not boiling water, stirring constantly until completely melted. Remove from heat, beat in sour cream, powdered sugar and vanilla.

confectioners sugar is simply powdered sugar. If you dont have any and are in a pinch, you can put regular table sugar in a food processor and blend it until it becomes powdered sugar.

Its generally used when making cakes, sweets, etc., or at least thats when I've used it. You can buy it. It comes either in a box or a bag, its relatively cheap. Plain sugar will not work....

No do not use normal sugar. Use powdered sugar.
