Diego Sanchez is undefeated and improving. However, to be considered a #1 contender, you must beat a top contender. I believe that Diego has a shot at becoming a #1 contender, but to do so, he'll have to beat either BJ Penn or Matt Hughes. Sanchez would have a better shot at Hughes, as his skill set is more similar yet not as refined as Penn's. I think Penn would beat Sanchez easily, whereas Hughes would have to grind down Nightmare. All of the top welterweights have/would handle Joe Riggs, and now Sanchez has to prove that he can fight with the best. I will have to see Hughes' next fight to speculate on Diego's chances. If Hughes comes back with avengeance, the Nightmare will get a wake up call.

Bad stylistic match up in my opinion.
Diego usually relies on his excellent conditioning and quick pace to overwhelm his fighters. He has pretty decent submission skills, and good wrestling. His stand up is about on Par with Matt Hughes, but the fact that Hughes is a high tempo fighter like Diego, and is pound for pound one of the strongest MMA fighters out there, I don't see Diego being able to handle him.
Diego normally relies on superior wrestling and position, and then just out paces his opponent. It is going to be hard to get the take down on Matt, or outwrestle him, and Matt's can easily maintain the pace that Diego sets, or set his own.
I would see Diego giving a good effort, but eventually losing via GnP, or a boring *** decision.

Diego with a little more seasoning will give Matt a serious run. Right now??? Would have to still give it to Matt. Diego likes going to the ground and Matt lives and breathes on the ground.

I think that he will have to fight Hughes in order to get a title shot eventually. And yes I think he has a chance of winning, a good chance. Diego has improved tremendously on his standup..and if it goes to the ground Diego will have the advantage over Hughes there as well. I believe people need to start giving him a little more credit, I know Riggs probably is now.

Deigo needs more time to work on his hands, did you see how scared he looked at the start of the fight, he has talent but i hope he doesn't take a title shot to soon,
gsp-penn- hughes would eat him up
he has a ways to go before he is at those 3 levels

As you probably saw last night Even Diego has a punchers chance. Everyone has a punchers chance. But, I think Looking at last nights fight between Diego and Riggs, Diego is a very likely candidate for any opponent. I loved it last night because Riggs is such a cocky @$$hole. DIESEL hahah!!!!! He was the fat kid in the class and now he has gotten in shape and thinks he's awesome. What a joke. Joe Corn Chips Riggs. "Diego obviously has a disadvantage in the stand up.....(BOOM)...."OH MY GOSH RIGGS IS OUT!!!!!"

Just to chime in on the comments as to who is better on the ground- Sanchez has a better guard game and Hughes is better on top. If Sanchez got Hughes on his back, I think he could win. Overall, I'd still have to give it to Hughes.

Hughes is better on the ground only if he is on top, cuz hes a wrestler, and wrestlers like being on top....hughes is not that good off his back.
