I know I need help. I have looked and looked for a therapist that specializes in eating disorders. I am having a difficult time finding one. I have tried regular therapy without success. Some one else must have dealt with this disease and won. Any help of any kind would me most appreciated.

Overeating and Binging

First stop trying to control your compulsive behaviour, instead add awareness to it, so if you are binging simply become aware of your actions, this will gradually heal the 'hungry' part of you that comes out of seek love and affection as food is form of affection or love.

Start loving and accepting yourself more and more each day, just the way you are, when you feel less empty within you will no longer need food to fill that hole up.

Most importantly beating yourself up after each binging will further push away the aggravated part of you, which only needs love that only you can give to yourself if you can accept yourself just the way you are. Since it would be counter productive, instead try to be compassionate to that hungry part of yourself.

Excessive self control in some another part of your life can also be the reason of this expression of that repressed part of yourself. Give yourself enough freedom to express what you are feeling you are within. Allow yourself to be who you are, at all times and you will soon no longer feel the need to numb yourself with food, or use it to feel special or simply good about yourself.

Before eating breath ten times, slowly and deeply and do a small prayer, make an offering your inner self or the divine in you. That way you can slowly start loving yourself in ways that are more healthy than food.

I wouldn't categorize it as a disease, it is an emotional problem. You use food as a pacifier for emotional issues, stress, etc. It also could go back to some trauma early in your life.

Therapy should help, if you are doing your homework. A therapist isn't a magic geni who cures you, it is you that does the work. If you don't control your impulses (behavior modification, biofeedback, talk therapy, etc.) you will continue to eat. You also have to enlist someone to keep you on task with a regular exercise and nutritional program. Learning how to eat healthy is essential and understanding how to cope is the other half of it.

Contact Overeaters Annomous, Weight Watchers and the mental health department of your state for referrals.

You may need to look for a psychiatrist as opposed to a therapist (which often are only psychologists and don't have a MD). There are different centers out there that deal with eating disorders as well - usually you will need the combination of of a psychiatrist and therapist to help with eating disorders. Depending on where you live, you may want to see if there is a hospital affiliated with a medical school nearby - those kind of facilities often will have comprehensive centers for eating disorders.

I was anorexic. I went through 3 doctors and 11 therapists with no help. YOU have to help yourself. YOU know what you are doing to your body and your mind everytime. What scared me out of being anorexic was doing a search online and seeing the pictures of women who were on the verge of dying, and some who were dead, brain dead, or just alone because of their eating disorders. Although I am now at a healthy weight and exercise regularly, it's hard to eat for me because food feels so wrong, tastes gross, and feels even worse on my tongue. But, I eat healthy because I want to be around for my 2 daughters and any grandchildren they may give me when they are older. You can beat this, but you have to WANT to beat it or you'll be spending thousands of dollars for therapists to no avail. It's hard, but with dedication to your own health you can overcome this. Good luck!!
