He just wants to sleep, although he did eat & drink a little- but just doesn't want to get up & walk around yet. The vet had to give him a tranquilizer beforehand & he is on an antibiotic because he broke a couple of his nails- vet said he gave her a very hard time & was very aggitated. When will the effects of the meds wear off & be back to normal self? Thank you!

I think the effects should wear off. Remember, he's just undergone a very invasive surgery and will want to rest awhile. He should soon be back to normal. My male cat acted just the same way when he was neutered, but now is as wild as he used to be.
Hope this helped.

I don't think this is out of line- He's just been through a very disturbing experience. The anesthesia takes a while to completely wear off. When my female cat was spayed she slept for 4 days. Did the vet tell you anything about how long the patient should be this way? If he doesn't look any better by tomorrow, call back and ask how long this should be going on. Until then soft food and TLC.

The medication/tranq will remain in the system until the cat can metabolize it - usually 24 hours. Keep the cat in a small, confined area until all effects have worn off and there is no risk of injury. Keep him from jumping on furniture, windows, cupboards, beds, etc. for a week to prevent strain or injury. The fact that he is eating and drinking is an excellent sign. He just needs to rest for a few days. Have you ever had surgery? You usually feel groggy for a day or several after the surgery. Rest is healing. He'll be just fine and congrats on neutering!!

Just like people, every animal experiences anesthesia and pain relievers differently.

He would have been groggy and not himself the day of the surgery and probably for 1/2 of the next day. By the end of the first day home (not the day of the surgery, the day after the surgery), he should start feeling like himself.

If he's on pain meds, those could make him drowsy also. The antibiotics shouldn't make him drowsey.

If he's not acting himself by tomorrow, give the vet a buzz to just run it past him.

Depending on your cats metabolism, it could take up to 48 hours for the effects of the anesthesia and pre-surgical-medications to wear off. After my dog was neutered he was groggy for a day and a half afterwards, it is not uncommon. The biggest concerns you should worry about are making sure he is not nauseous or vomiting from the meds (especially for the first few days after surgery) and keeping him calm for the full week afterwards. Best of luck with him. If you are concerned about him, the vet should be able to let you know what meds they used and about how long it will take him to metabolize them out of his system.

Sound like your cat is still recovering from the tranquilizers and anesthesia. Plus it sounds like your cat stress himself out by fighting with the vet. This is not unusual. Keep an eye on him and if he does not start coming around to being his normal self in 48 hours call your vet and arrange a recheck.

If he's not back to normal 48 hours after surgery, call the vet. It can take a while for the meds to work all the way out of his system.

ya normally after cats get spayed or neutered they gain weight. Since shes a outdoor and indoor she could have worms or some other problem or since she does go outside she is slim because shes moving around alot. I would just take her to the vet to make sure she doesnt have any diseases or worms so that you know shes healthy for sure! That way you know its not because of a health problem is the reason that shes slim! So take her to the vet! Good luck and i hope shes fine!

Ok, How would you act if you had your nuts chopped off? Me if I had them and they were chopped off I think I would moap around for a few days maybe even longer....of course your cat was very aggitated and giving the vet a hard time she was cutting his nuts off! I think that your cat will be okay once he heals and no longer in pain....Don't know how he will go back to normal, because he is not the same cat as before......but I would guess that he will adjust.....

This is very normal. Don’t worry. Just leave it. After all it was a real operation with anesthetics etc.
There will soon be a time when you’ll wish your cat were a little calm from time to time.
