You should really make sure your husband wants a dog before you go out and buy one. If your sure, then check:
www.dogbreedinfo.com (They have a good description of the size/shape, temperment, height/weight, health problems, living conditions that would be good for the breeds, type of exercise they need, life expectancy, grooming and the origin of the breed. And lots of pictures.)
www.akc.org (It's a good place to find a reputable breeder. They're gonna ask you lots of questions to make sure you're a good home and you should ask them a lot as well to make sure they're really good.)
www.minpin.org (It's the MinPin Club of America. Lots of facts)

The Miniature Pinscher is susceptible to patella luxation and eye problems. As for giving one at Christmas time, wait till the holiday is over. Put doggy related things like a bowl, toys, and if possible a picture of the new puppy under the tree. That way when things have calmed down and there aren't all sorts of cables and tasty looking ornaments about, you can bring your puppy home to safety.

Min pins (miniature pinschers)are pretty easy to care for. They are very loyal and devoted to specific people who's laps they seek out. A few years ago we got a female primarily because they are very protective and thought she would make a good "alarm dog" if an intruder should approach. However, she barked incessantly at any and all guests as soon as they pulled into our driveway. Then when someone came into our yard to steal a Christmas display in the dead of night, she made no noise at. We finally got rid of her mainly because of all the yapping.

Befroe you get him one for a present MAKE sure he really wants one. These are not really manly dogs. They are small hyper yappers. And I mean they shriek when they bark and they live to bark at anything that moves and some things that do not.
My nieghbors have had two. Both were barkers.
They had some health issue wit the first one and lost her when they tried to breed her. They lost her and the pups. Then got another female. She seems to be better.

I am not sure of much info on them medical wise, but i do know they can cost anywhere from 200-400 dollars. They are loyal dogs, but are extremely hyper, throughout their lives. We nicknamed them the ADHD dog.
