for those who want to expiate their evil deeds, and is tecnique valid for believers and unbelievers alike.

what are the modern day varieties of this technique?
are the amerindiand rituals involving a man being hauled into the air by nothing but claws stuck into his body anything to do with the concepts of atonement or expiation?

you christians make me laugh. you think just because an imaginary character MIGHT have died on a cross that you can sin with impunity because HE'S already paid for your sins in advance!!
EVERYTHING you do, you are going to have to answer for! youre not going to get let off just because you say you believe!

I cannot speak for the American Indian rituals; however, pain has been used for pennance and atonement for ages. I cannot see where it would be beneficial in any way but punishment for those who are nonbelievers. It is hard to accept pain as atonement unless you believe that it is for such a purpose. No one "likes" pain; you have to believe in its benefits if you are willing to experience it for atonement. Self-flaggelation is still used in some areas; some consider extensive fasting to be "painful."

In the old testament of the Bible a blood sacrifice was needed for the atonement of sin. When Jesus died on the cross that was our blood sacrifice for mankind. He died once for all. His suffering and sacrifice was all done so we wouldn't have to. People who suffer pain for an atonement o evil deeds aren't achieving anything as far as forgiveness only unneeded pain.

The only true pennance, as the Bible says, is a broken and contrite heart. Coming to God in Jesus' name and asking for forgiveness from are sins is what is required for atonement of all sin. Jesus already paid the price with His Blood. We can do nothing more than ask for forgiveness. The Bible says that then, God will remember our sins no more, as far as the east is from the west. God Bless You!

Well, I'm sure some people do this.. but whether it's a "valid" technique is going to vary by individual. Some people will say sure, it's valid, others will say certainly not.
Personally I think it's futile.

It only causes more pain. The technique lost its importance many years ago. Didn't work.

repentance is of the heart. Jesus bore the pain and suffering so we don' t have to. If you go the route your describing then your saying that Christs work was incomplete.
