I think they are necessary. Students need lockers to store their coats, bookbags, and other belongings. These items need to be secured with locks in order to prevent theft.

At my highschool, they had locks built into the lockers. While this satisfied the school officials (they could easily open the lockers for inspections) the students were upset because they were easily broken into. Therefore, I think students should bring their own locks. There should also be a policy put into place stating that school officials have the right to inspection whenever there is a need to do so.

I think they are a necessity. How else would students protect their personal items? I sure wouldn't want someone to just walk by and steal my daughter's leather jacket right out of an open locker. And since most schools don't allow coats, bookbags or sometimes even purses in the classrooms, there has to be somewhere safe to put them.

You don't really have a context for this.

If you are asking me my preference of locker types, then -- I prefer the combination type to the key type.

If you are asking me if I think they should have locks -- I have to point out that it isn't a locker if you can't lock it.
