Can I total my sleep hours and get an 8 hour avg., but some nights get as little as three whereas some days off i can crash for 12? Or is that still considered unhealthy?

No its not healthy. You should average the same amount of sleep per night. Just like food your body can be deprived of rest.

A nornal person must have an ave. of 6-9 hrs of sleep.....

Yes...what your are doing is unhealthy...you should have a normal sleep pattern like 5-8 hours...but 3?? come on...give yourself a break...

Sleeping for more than 10 hours has its bad side...

You should think about what your geting into...

Bottom line is that moderation should be practiced

It's healthy to the point that your body is telling you to sleep. But not healthy of the irregularities of the sleep schedule.

Try setting an average time to lay down to bed in relation to when you -HAVE- to wake up for work/school/what not, and try to train your body that it's time to turn off. It will take a long time, especialy if you have distractions/insomnia and especialy since your body has learned to turn off when it needs to.

Home remedies like warm milk, excersize, melatonin, and counting sheep have never worked 100%. It's more a force of will and calming techniqes that work better, even reading a book will keep a person up past midnight. Learn what works for you.
