Well- back when the bible was written, we didn't have the technologies we do now. So the Hebrews were instructed to avoid eating certain animals because they were more prone to being sick or otherwise infested with parasites.
Nowadays, cat fish can be raised on farms, where their health and food can be controlled.
Toward the end of the bible, one of the apostles received a vision about a cloth coming down from heaven loaded with all kinds of animals- 'Clean' and 'Unclean'- and he was instructed to eat. And when the apostle objected on the grounds that it was against the Hebrew food laws to eat some of these things, God told him 'Do not call Unclean that which I have cleansed.' So- with some caution- I'm guessing that it is perfectly acceptable to eat catfish now.
I hope this helps!

You probably found that in the Old Testament, which is also the Tora--Judaism's holy book. According to the bible, when Moses led the people of Israel through the Red Sea, he pointed out what could and could not be eaten. Catfish is something they could not eat because it is a bottom feeder, and is therefore unclean.
If you are Jewish, then I suggest you take this up with your rabbi, but I would stay away from Catfish if I were you. If you're not, then eat up, there isn't really anything wrong with it.

Well, if you are Jewish then I say stay away from them according to the Bible. If you are Christian then it's more optional - you don't have to follow the letter of the Law. In my opinion, I used to eat cat fish until I found out that they are bottom feeders (meaning they eat junk and stuff) - which is maybe why God told Israel to stay away from them.
Cat fish are so named because of they look like they have "whiskers" on either side of their head.

They had different laws then for hygiene and health reasons, and for religious reasons but I am not 100% sure of that. I think it is because catfish are "bottom feeders" and they filter food through their mouth, so they would be viewed as "unclean" in those times. However, this is the year 2006, not biblical times, and I don't think the same rules about food apply today, as those fish are fit for human consumption. I suppose it depends how extreme you are in your religious views.

lets face it.. the Bible has been rewritten so many times how do we know what was original text and what wasnt??? King James "version" is the most well known to be very different from the original.. as it was edited to suit his beleifs....
even the original translation was wrong in some places.. and we all know it WASNT originally written in verse form.. which often distorts meanings...
ok the reason was becuase the fish is a bottom feeder it was thought to be eating poop and waste material.. the "puritans" of the time didnt like this and incorporated it in the Bible..

Realistically, the Bible has a lot of stuff in it that no one follows anymore... such as that women who are menstruating are unclean and should be kept apart, and that after giving birth you have to sacrifice an animal to god after a period of cleansing (between 33-66 days, depending on the gender of the child). It also states that it's forbidden for men to cut their hair.
It's bizarre how people pick and choose what they follow out of the Bible as it suits them.

Those who wrote the bible loved the taste of cat fish, So they wrote that GOD said they should not eat cat fish--- therefore they saved all the catfish for themselves.
The law makers of today do the same thing only on a much grander scale.
