If you want a fun, cheap vacation (unless you like to gamble), you can find some great vacation deals in Las Vegas. If you'd rather hit the beach, take on the Gulf Coast (be sure you're east of the Mississippi River). Mississippi and Alabama are still recovering from Katrina, but there are some great spots on the beaches in Florida. Mississippi and Alabama are great too, but just check ahead in case of ongoing hurricane repairs.
If you're into theme parks, Disney World will cater to you hand and foot. Otherwise, head for Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington, TX (Near DFW). While you're there, check out a Texas Rangers game. It gets really hot there in the summer, but Six Flags is a great place and Arlington is a wonderful city.
History buffs should head to Shiloh Battlefield in TN. It's massive and will take at least a couple of days to check out everything.
You could also head for Wyoming or Montana and check out either Yellowstone or the Grand Tetons. They are two of our nation's best parks, but there will be a lot of traffic there.
Hope this answers your question.

somewhere WARM, classy, and fun... i recommend somewhere on the gulf =), or...
Myrtle Beach. Barefoot Resort. It's a community of a bunch of different condiminiums, each with their own pool, and then one large tower, with a huge, few acre pool. There is also a free shuttle to take you back and forth to the beach, and there's also a shopping center called Barefoot Landing right at the edge of the resort. It's an outdoor shopping mall, there's fireworks every wednesday night I do believe. There's also the House of Blues right at the edge of the resort, and the Alabama theatre. "The One" show at alabama theatre is a must-see! There's many restaurants at Barefoot Landing, but there's also exquisite kitchens in the barefoot resort condos for a night in. These condos are top-notch... classy, clean, and wonderful. There's also mini golf about every 10 seconds down the main highway, and you can always go to the Boardwalk for a "going out" experience. There's bars there and terrific nightlife. Things to avoid: The Ripley Believe it or Not museam is a waste of money, in my opinion. There's also a mall called the Colonial Mall, and it's nothing special, but they've got some great deals on Myrtle Beach gear. If you're into the more family oriented environment, go down to surfside beach. It's just a few miles south of myrtle beach. The resort I reccomended is in North Myrtle Beach, the nightlife and young crowd is at the heart of Central Myrtle Beach, and the families are at Surfside beach. Best of luck to you!
