I started typing at school with this typing program called ten thumbs. But this didn't really help my speed. It sure helped me actually learn the keys and positions.
But one day I went home and created a Yahoo! Account. And that was when i actually learned to type really fast in messenger. Coz you can't have ppl waiting for you when u r speaking right? (Tip: Look at the keyboard for the first few days or hours, then you will slowly develop speed!) But don't forget you should also take typing lessons or programs that will help enforce your accuracy.
Your left index finger should be placed on 'f' and your right index finger should be placed on 'j'. Then both of your thumbs should be placed on the same one spacebar. Doing so, your typing position should be just about CORRECT.

Learn to type without looking at the keyboard. Rather look at the screen instead while you type.
Keep you left and right index fingers over the home keys (F) & (J)
Some key board have a bump on these keys so you can find them easily.
After that practice man, practice....

Try doing exercises like go through all your main keys "asdfghjkl;"them ar your mani keys your left fingers should be on these keys starting with the pinky."asdf" the thumb is on the space bar and can come up to hit "g" your right hand is on staring with the pinky ";lkj" this thumb is also on the space bar and can come up and hit the "h" Then all you have to do is move you placed fingers above or balow where they ar laying. "b" can be hit by both your pointer fingers but they also cover "rtgvcb" for your left. and "juhbny" just go through hitting your main keys in a order then move on to the top row then the bottom. It may be slow going at first but in the end you cando up to 60 words per minute. Or more.

One of the ways that i have personally improved my typing is thru:
1)Chatting proper language with my friends on instant messengers(try to type faster everytime, like a race against yourself),
2)Knowing what keys for which hand(do this to let your fingers know their "roles"),
3)Blogging/writing email/typing fiction on microsoft word, and last but certainly not least
4)Getting a good comfy keyboard.
Hope it helps. :)
