Bring a portable DVD player, some music to listen to (iPod, Discman, etc), a good book or two depending on how long the road trip will be, and maybe a book of puzzles.
Also, don't be afraid to ask questions to the people sitting around you on the bus. If they look irritated, back off, but if they seem to enjoy talking, get to know them. Who knows? By the end of your trip, you might have a new best friend.

Some advice, dont give in to the beggars outside the bus stations that you are laid over at. Word gets around that you are easy, if you give one some change they will all come to you. Dont believe the old scam "I just need $5 to get my ticket to wherever." It is a load of crap. Stay inside the larger stations and find a seat close to the ticket agent if possible. If you get off for ten minutes at a rest stop, put a book or something in your seat before you get off. Preferably something with your name on it. If you are a pot smoker, NEVER, EVER take a smoke with a stranger, you dont know what they have laced it with. Or where there hands have been. Remember, people from all walks of life ride buses. Buses are good inexpensive means for transportation, that is why there are lots of rif-raf that ride them. Be friendly, but think about what you say before you say it as to not give out important information. With your question I am assuming you are inexperienced to riding buses cross country. Just want you to be safe. Hope you have a great trip.

Take a laptop or dvd player to watch movies. I personally recommend bringing TVshows on DVD (preferably something you haven't watched already) because you can get more into the story and it will last longer than a movie. Be sure to bring a charger so you can power it up at any stations you stop at! I'd also recommend bringing and a pillow and blanket for those overnight trips. You can also take video games, an mp3 player, and reading material, but I use my laptop for movies, music, and games to avoid carrying around too much stuff.

Pick up some magazines and snacks. Take a good novel, a blanket, a small pillow and some hand held games. If you owe someone thank-you or holiday cards this will be a great time to write them.
Enjoy your trip!

Sudoku book. It's the new puzzle craze and it is fun, but make sure you get a book that gets harder as you go in it. Have a safe trip.
