For someone who is a manic depressive and already taking prescription anti-depressants, who drinks to excess and smokes a lot of dope - what effects would you expect to see? It can't be good right???

lol....excessive drinking and pot smoking (You said he smokes dope....hopefully you dont mean heroin).... is never a good thing. As these things are DEPRESSANTS!....

I'd imagine that these bad habits are counteracting the effects of the anti-depressants. I bet if your friend stopped drinking and doing drugs, that he(or she) would notice that he(or she) is not feeling so depressed as often.

I used to be on anti-depressants and in highschool I smoked a bit of pot.... quite frequently may I add. I always felt like **** the next day. I'd be depressed, paranoied. I stopped doing that before my senior year (of highschool)...and I dont even take anti-depressants anymore.

The thing is, your friend has to stop by himself. Dont put it on you to get him to stop... (My father died of a heroin overdoce, it kills me on a daily basis to think that I could've done something to stop him...... truth is, the only one who could've stopped him..is him. )

Good luck.

Honestly, For me nothing in moderation but...but...but... With all the above (SSRI) I also take hydrocodone (No aceto) Your concern should be the alcohol and it really depends on if your taking a SSRI,SSNRI, or Dopamine reuptake inhibitor. Alcohol increases serotonin, dopamine and especially norepinephrine. SSRIs are seem to be know to increase alcohol cravings in past alcoholics because of its damage to the serotogenic system. If all used in moderation you should be OK but again depending on what antidepressent your taking you should also be concerned about something called serotonin syndrome which is too much serotonin in your brain, Anna Nikoles son died from this even though he was not drinking alchohol he was taking mehtadone which is also a SSRI. So since alcohol increases all of the above chemicals you either going to have increased effects or the opposite effects (not good) especially for a manic. Ok the dope isnt a problem...really You might just get real fat LOL. Drinking is excess (super excess) will probably cause hallucinations and you will end up pissing a whole lot of people off (get annoying) and end up passed out in the bathroom wearin a shirt as pants and toilet water all over your head. Fom my experience thats what happened to me.pretty retarded huh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOLOLOL so I drink in moderations now and dont have a problem although at that pooint I drank 26 beers (budlight) and about half a 5th of Sky Vodka. I should be dead!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am just being honest about my experience with drinking in excess and do you want to end up in the bathroom like that not rmembering a dam thing. So if you drink a 6 pack you should be good just dont go overboard it is very easy I have noticed taking those meds allows you to drink like a fish!! That was actually the most I have ever drank in my life and I contribute that to that fact that i was drinking like a fish and I was not able to stop my self which is not like me at all. So I turned into the opposite person that I would have normaly been. Again I am just beiing honest!!! so im sure these morons have something to say about how retarded I am but (thier right) but the answeres that say (dont do it) or your (goingto die) are not very helpfull. Just be aware you might go over board and not be able to control your intake and it will be easy to drink too much. Thats seems to be the biggets danger you loose your control. Also your corrdination will be gone hence toilet water on your head.ahahaha I welcome any critics to the information I have provided. If someone notices I am wrong about something (other than my experience) please correct me!!!

First of all, alcohol is a depressant, so this person is really defeating the purpose of taking the antidepressants. Not smart either to take drugs with alcohol, in fact it is down right toxic. Then add pot, lovely, what a great mix. You are right, it is no where near being good.

I suggest this person discuss what they are doing with their counselor and make a life change...quick.

It's not a good scene, I use to date someone whom was into over drinking and using crack. Maybe you need to move out or try to put some set rules down and if your roomate doesn't comply then tell him or her to find some other place to live.

well weed is self medicating i know i use to smoke and no as long as he does this meds cant work but telling him to stop is like telling wall to move i would make a anonymous call to Dr and let him know friend is self medicating so you don't have to find him dead but that is a iffy one cause you may not want to snitch get brochures and lay around apt and most people see weed as a passive drug i know i did
