Tho the news media does not put Islam in a good light, it has brought it to the attention of the world. And, people want to know what it is all about, and are inquiring-are learning.
People are finding it a much more logical religion than Christianity. To me, the thought that G-d/Jesus are the same is heresy. There is no G-d but G-d. You can find this concept in Judaism, also. But, Judaism does not try to convert, and Islam does. Therefore-the growth.

I would like to know the real reason too, I'm baffled!
And just because many people follow it, doesn't mean it's any better, many people used to believe the the sun revoloved around the earth, they weren't right at alll
majority always conforms, i think it's just a fad
and most of the people who convert, are christians, they don't even try to learn about other religions or question the existence of god at all
i have tried many times to see the good in the religion, and i feel guilty for sounding biased, but i'm not going to be oblivious

A combination of things...
First, seems to me that there are more of Islam faith than any other which means every child they have is being taught that belief.
Second, like two previous have mentioned, 9/11 has actually turned Islam into a main stream religion. Likely, most saw as obscure when Mahomed Ali and Ahmad Rashad converted. Now, it is seen as a world religion and many have started to explore the whys. Sometimes that searching can create conversions.

How many are converting to Islam and how many are leaving? Is there any record? No. Leaving Islam can be punished with death. How many are silent not practicing Muslim. I'm sure very many. And does more mean necessarily better or prove anything?

Because Islam gives answers for the old new questions that perplexed mankind since the dawn of human history: who am I? why am I here? who created this world? how? why? what's death? what happens to me during and after it? why to do good deeds? why to avoid bad ones?. It answers the two natures of human being: material and spiritual... to sum up: it is designed by the the same hands that created you, that hands of Allah who knows what do you need in this life he's given to you.

I agree with sunflower. I think 9/11 really woke a lot of people up and they wanted to know more about the terrorists' religion that the media kept hyping. The only positive thing to come outta that mess was people coming to islam.

Same as any other religion. A vehicle for power hungry people to be able to control other people.
Also some people (not all) involved in religion are not educated and believe in superstition. (people used to say that thunder was the angels up in heaven having a bowling match. Some people have the religion of the ladder: "don't walk under a ladder it's bad luck" as if there was a ladder god that would be angered !! LOL!
Of course there are some people who are different:
L Ron Hubbard (the founder of Scientology) once said: "To get rich, start a religion".
