My 11 month old Blue Heeler/Lab/? mix licks - herself and people - until you think her tounge is going to fall off. I know why she licks herself. But why does she lick family members (even the "alpha" dog) so much? She even licks the cats - I'm surprised she doesn't have hairballs. Fortunately, she will stop when told. But she will do it non-stop if you let her. What do you think?

I guess she is helping the others to "take a bath".
If she licks herself, I read a book before, it says the the dog licks itself to receive Vitamin from it's body.

They do it as instinct because in a pack situation they lick the other members to reassure them that the pack still accepts them and its submissive behaviour to indicate i respect you and your place in the pack. In other words "do ya still like me do ya huh do ya huh huh do ya".

i would try that bitter apple spray (don't spray it on sensitive areas though) it will learn that it doesn't always taste so good.
