The previous ansers are mostly correct ie. tds = 3 times a day, qds = 4 times a day. In the UK!
In the US, qds refers to once a day, so the answers are only correct for UK dosage of medicines.

It is a shortened version of what they are saying usually in Latin, Like, NPO (nothing by mouth) PRN (as needed). It can be just the first letters, like CHF ( congestive heart failure). Not a lot of room to write on medical reports and saves time not having to write out the full thing.
