It's really not that easy.
Most people can only get a 3 month tourist visa, which means you can't even work.
To live there for a year you'd need a green card. To get one, the only ways I know of are to either marry a Yank, have an American child, bring in enough cash to buy or start a business, be a student or be sponsored by a company to work for them.
The last two are probably the easiest options.
Studying is the easiest way. To enrol with an American uni you'd need to pay international fees (hugely expensive) and I'm not sure whether you'd be allowed to work or not. Or you could enrol on a course in the UK that allows you to spend a year there.
As for company sponsorship, it's pretty difficult as the company has to convince immigration that you are really the only person for the job, and a US citizen couldn't do it as well. So you'd need to be highly specialised in your field. Or if you're a nurse- they have big shortages there so a lot of nurses can get jobs in their hospitals (except child nurses- apparently in America they don't have seperate pediatric nurses so only UK adult nurses can do it) But as people have pointed out, things like Disney and Camp America have programmes where they sponsor people to come and work for them, if you're happy with the jobs on offer!
I know a lot of people who have wanted to live there and given up because it just wasn't viable, but there may be options I don't know about so keep looking into it.
Good luck!

Contact employers directly and they can assist you in attaining a work visa to enter the country.
I know Disney World has such a program. There should be many employers willing to help you get on depending on your skillset.

Well, if you're not american, the authorities will assume you're a danger to society and therefore GOOD LUCK. Try Canada instead, far better.
