Nikon vs. Sony

Which would you choose - a Nikon or a Konica/Minolta? Sony basically bought out Minolta and put their name on the camera. This is Sony's first DSLR and the D80 is simply the latest evolution of Nikon's years of experience. I wouldn't want to own anyone's "first ever" product, even if it was named "Camera of the Year."

When it comes time to buy lenses, do you want to be stuck with the limited amount of lenses that fit the Sony/Konica/Minolta mount or the endless selection of Nikon and Nikon-compatible lenses?

Yes, my bias is showing, but I'd buy the Nikon in a heartbeat over the Sony.

See the noise level in the Sony at this page:

Click on "Our in-depth review" and "Read owner opinions."

In the owner opinions, I gleaned a few interesting comments, even from positive reviews:

"If I had the bucks, I'd go Nikon."

"I have some noise issues at ISO400 and above... for professional use only ISO up to 200 seems acceptable."

"...please start performing at your full potential as soon as possible. We all know you can perform better."

"This seems to say, 'Sony doesnt care about photography, Sony cares about money'."

"I think this camrea is a nice beginning for Sony, but not the camera I will buy."

"Would like dual aperture and shutter control dials... [instead of a single dial for everything]."

Both are good cameras, but if a friend were to ask me I'd advise him to go with either a Nikon or a Canon instead of the Sony. The reason is that both of the main camera brands will offer a lot more long term flexibility verses what you will likely find with the Sony Alpha. They have a better market for things like used lenses and third party accessories.

The D80 is an excellent camera. I have had the chance to hold one, check out the viewfinder, etc and I really like it. If I were in the market today it would be a strong contender for me personally.

The Sony has some nice bells and whistles, such as built in image stabilization but overall I'd go with the D80.

As an FYI - Sony makes the sensors for both cameras. They are probably different but Sony makes them both.

You really need to decide what you are using the camera for and what you plan on using it for. The nikon d80 is a great camera. yes it is true sony makes the sensors for it. the are of a different caliber then sonys version.
The best I can advise you is to go to a professional camera shop and ask them to explain what the differences are and wht the cameras are capable of. A good camera shop can help you determine the best camera for your needs.
As for personal preference I would stick with nikon. They have a very good track record and are usually very reliable. Sony although good has issues with quality. I have owned both brands and had less problems with nikon.
