Are they the same religion with different practices, or different religions all together? Why do they (the followers of both) hate each other so much?

It is, to the best of my recollection, a dispute about the successor to the Prophet. He had no son, but a daughter named Fatima. She married one "Ali." one sect accepted him as the successor, but the other (I don't know which one) gave the succession to another male blood relative.

I think the argument is whether the succession can come through a female, and Ali was not a blood relative. The two sects, like reformation Christians, immediately fell on one another violently and have continued to so since that time.

Some one else can nail more detailed info from an encyclopedia, but that is all I recall.

Sunni s believe in 4 leaders after muhammad the prophet as religious leader and they call them (kholafa ol rashedin)
but shia s are beliving in more than this ,some in 6 and some in 12

The difference is Sunni has an N Shia has an H.

One is Moderate Islam and the other is Extreme Conservative.
