Man can and does survive in most environments because man is so adaptable. In Australia about 2% of the land is irrigated and 6% cultivated but 80% is listed as suitable for grazing. In reality it would be a good deal less probably 50% though cattle are moved into many areas after good rain. With water provided 20% of Australia could be farmed. Countries with a higher rainfall can farm more land. There remain areas where farming does not happen simply because they are isolated from markets. These areas include extensive jungles and grasslands. Enough usable land exists to feed, sustainably another ten billion people at least. The rich and infamous would rather avoid the crush however and so encourage various alternatives. You can pick them, they can afford to produce documentaries for the Discovery channel.

I don't know but I've heard 1/8 of it is habitable (or slightly less than half of the land)

And what do you mean by inhabited? 2 people per square mile 1?
What's the limit?
