If you are not meant to know about his situation, then carry on as you would of a normal Christmas. He would probally want you to see him, in your eyes,as a good friend and neighbour who cares. This has far more value than any gift you could give.

Whatever you would get him if he didn't have cancer. Generally, people with cancer do not want to be treated any differently than anyone else.

How about a gift card to a book store? or to his favorite restaurant?

Ask him what he wants for Christmas.

Put together several IOU tickets. For shopping, for house cleaning, for transportation to and from doctor's appointments, grocery shopping, snow shoveling -- all those everyday tasks that your neighbor may not feel like doing. See if other neighbors want to add their services too.

If your neighbor doesn't redeem those tickets, do them anyway. And, with a smile!

One other ticket idea? Prayers.

I wouldn't get her anything. I would make a book of coupons that she can redeem, that you offer to make a meal, clean the house, run errands, offer transportation, and even if she doesn't call for redemption do this any way.
