It is the kind of wag where it looks like his tail is floating. He will lift it up and let it fall like a feather.

Oh and also, I have to add, this always happens when he is laying in bed with me.

He could be showing you several things.... Happiness, angry, playfulness...
When you say is name, he is showing you that he recognises that you are speaking to him and if he appears to be calm and his eyes are not really big (the dark part will be large if agitated or if playing), then he is very happy and content!!!
Have fun with you cat and good luck!

Wagging it from side to side is indeed a sign of agitation, but if he lifts it up straight, that's a good sign. A cat carries his tail high when happy! Sometimes when they're very happy they'll keep it up there, but I've also seen this brief lifting it up and then slowly letting it go down again, usually with the cat at work. When she comes up to me when I call her, she keeps her tail up, but when she's on her way somewhere and doesn't come, she still lifts her tail just for a bit. It's just a brief greeting, sorta like we'd lift our hand to say 'hi' and then continue on our way.
Btw, when a cat is sitting somewhere and just the tip of the tail is wagging, it's usually a sign of indecision.

I'm sorry, I did not take note of the kind of 'wag' you were talking about. The type you are referring to is a territorial gesture. Lifting his tail, and exposing his anus is a territorial gesture. When he drops it lightly, it is a signal that he comfortable, he perceives no threat.
Cats often wag their tails for the opposite reason that dogs do. When they are uncomfortable or angry, they start to move their tail erratically. What you really have to watch out for is when they start slapping their tail on the ground, or worse, when the hairs on the tail extend, giving the tail an extremely fat appearance. Then, they really are on the lookout to attack!

Cats wag their tails when they are irritated or angry. They really hold grudges.I would try to have some quality time with him/her.

cats move their tail because they are either happy or annoyed. I think it is an involuntary movement but tails are there for the cats balance

He is upset. Normally cats move their tail from side to side when they are agitated or about to attack.
