~ I would suggest Knoppix or Ubuntu because you don't have to install them, therefore your primary operating system and your partitions stay untouched.

When you want to use one, you just put it in the CD player and boot your computer from it.

You can get/request a CD here:

My advice to you being a novice PC user is to steer clear of linux. If you want to try a linux operating system without wiping out windows, i recommend that you look at Kubuntu...it can run live through the CD without install.

Linux is a very safe and secure operating system that would completely replace windows, unless you know how to dual boot. There are some compatibility issues with programs that you use in windows (all of them)...

My suggestion is to back up all of your documents onto a CD, and Wipe your hard drive clean (can be done with a Windows Setup disk), reinstall windows, antivirus, antispyware, firewall, TuneUp Utilties 2006 (www.tune-up.com), Firefox, Office (if you have it), and your documents. Make sure that you at least have the drivers for your internet connection on a disk (modem or Network drivers) in case you need to download other drivers from your Vendor's website. That will fix your windows problems. Good Luck.

I agree with what is said below. Steer clear of linux if you are new to computers. Its a good operating system to use but windows are far easier as it is probably what you are familiar with? Linux is good, but a whole other kettle of fish. If you need any more help just ask!

I bought SUSE Linux 7.3 three years ago and ran it alongside Windows for a year. I never understood the system, despite 20 years experience with DOS/Windows3.1/95/98/XP.

Stick with XP.
