Our country which once represented values, does not seem to be any more in those books. There is hypocrisy. Whether it suits us or not, we must wear a tuxedo, instead of the casual comfortable dhoti.

Please don't make the general mistake of interpreting culture in terms of dressing, what one eats or eats on a banana leaf or in a imported ceramic plate, or wears dhoti or trousers. This has nothing to do with profoundness and philosophy of any culture.

Culture really means your overall approach to life--- the actions that u perform each moment in order to further your life and of your near ones, how u perform it--- whether by complaining and boasting and hanckering or by just quitely doing the work that is beneficial for the entire mankind, how u treat a stranger, whether u offer them help or not, how u talk to powerless and helpless people!

The westerners are bred in that very WESTERN CULTURE but not all of them are behaving in a junglee manner like some of our youngsters are behaving. Dressing and food and other fashion fads have not much to do with how u treat others around u. In Haryana and punjab and UP all dhoti wearing "desi" culture wallahs are killing girl child and persecuting and killing anyone who dares to disagree with how they percieve the world.

But we must understand what is happening? with the opening up of Indian economy and privatisation-globalisation what has happened is that the speed of negative as well as positive developments have tremendously increased. They were present earlier also but not so much visible. Today, because of spread of wealth and technology it has become possible for a many type of people - both good and bad- to do what they cud not do earlier.

So out of the present younger gen u will find both sensible and villain types. MOST OF THEM ARE HEADED TOWARDS THE PATH THEY HAVE BEEN TRAINED OR LURED TO WALK ONTO. IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE SENSIBLE FELLOWS OF INDIA TO PUSH THEM ALL TOWARDS CONSTRUCTIVE AND PROGRESSIVE PATH!!!

It depends on how one views Western culture. From my own conversations with people from India (as recent as last night) many view these changes as progression. The children of my friends are/were raised with the traditional values of India and have held on to these values; I live in California.
Here, I still see the Dhoti worn for formal occasions such as weddings although I must admit that I see more men wearing suits for special occasions. Also, observing the caste system is still alive well over here. I don't think that will ever change.

I agree that cultured countries are becoming more westernised but I think it's also up to us as a generation to teach our kids our culture and even enforce it. It's interesting that here in the west, people are fascinated with other cultures. I see gori's walking around with bindi's. Indians born here don't speak Hindi and those that do refuse. I don't get it but if you want to change it do something about it now before it's too late.
