Why do they call it 1 story on a building or 13 storys high...?

Please be nice my 5 year old is asking this question..and I have to read them to him...

Hmm... is your son thinking of a story as in stories that are in books and told to them by parents?

I would try to explain in this way... a building has one or more levels or floors. Another name for a level or a floor is a story. You can think of it as each floor has interesting people and some furnitures and other stuff. Together, these make up a "story" on each floor.

It's from the latin word "historia" when painted windows and sculptures were put on the sides of buildings.
