At the core of your being you know all that is. At that level you are all-knowing, all-powerful, all-loving, and all-present. This self is the creator of your world. To most people this self is hidden or non-existent. The swami being aware of his own Nature at that level, understood that he served as a symbol of this innermost self to many people. The Christ did the exact same thing. By serving as a symbol of your inner self, they could then introduce you to yourself at that level. Psychologically crafty methods.
