The best way to detect alterations is to magnify the photo with Photoshop, Picassa, etc. and look for evidence of alteration. This can be difficult, but is the method used in forensics.
Here is a link to a paper describing what things to look for:

I hope you find something.

To begin the best weapon to use to fight fraudulant digitally manipulated images is with a trained human eye. Most people use Adobe Photoshop and other photo manipulation software quite clumisly and leave behind tell tale artifacts of manipulation that don't require an expensive software analysis.
Now for those photo manipulations that are questionable but have passed the initial inspection by a trained imaging forensics expert, there is a software developed at Dartmouth University that can do amazing things that humans can't do so well for instance being able to recognize marginal changes in light direction, as well as minute digital artifacting left behind in Photoshop. However, the software still needs a trained digital imaging forensics technician to operate the software and to analyze the data. Still there is a small margin of images that can go undetected, images that are so clean that not even a human or a computer software can detect differences. Currently the software is used by the FBI and large news agencies like Reuters.
Now there are new digital cameras that are being developed or already in use such as the Canon 1ds that imbed an invisible file in the image which if digitally manipulated, a companion canon software can automatically tell if the image has been manipulated by looking to see if the imbedded invisible file is intact or not.
In conclusion, yes there are some images that can evade detection, but a majority will be detected.

Call a local photo restoration service in your area and ask them if they would take a look at the image for you. Most shops will be glad to do it for free.
You might also call one of the larger modeling agencies in your area and as them which retoucher they use...
