Maybe they don't like it when nosey documentary presenters try to listen into their conversation so they hum to each other instead?

that's one possible answer....

OR.... maybe he LOVES to sing, but his voice is only "eh" (its not great) and he's embarrassed to really belt it out. so the only thing he can do is hum..
