I live on a Pacific island, and have to go off for three weeks. my dog will be kept on my fairly large balcony. She will be checked on everyday and played with, but she will spend the majority of the time by herself. Is this going to traumatize her? I don't know what else to do. there are not really any other options because of the country that I live in.

Um, yeah, I live in a third world. There are no kennels, if she is taken off island she cannot get back in, I did't say anything about tieing her to the balcony, and the balcony is very safe, very.

im sorry ,but i think being alone like this will cause her some considerable distress.
it would be better for her to stay with a friend/relative/neighbour while you are away .or failing that pay someone to stay at your home and look after her .
hope you find a solution :)

Most dogs that go to kennels only see people when they are fed and cage cleaned. I don't know what you are referring to as a balcony but, over here it is not a safe place to keep a dog. Will the dog have refuge from the elements? Is the balcony a raised area where the dog could try to escape, fall and be injured? What is the weather like? How much time will she really be alone? What if she barks will the neighbors cause a stink? How often will she be checked on and played with?

If you love your dog, take the dog off the island to a pet kennel, they aren't that expensive. At least there, he will have fun and be taken care of...balcony doesn't sound good at all. What if there's a storm?

it is unwise and unkind to leave an animal tied to a balcony. especially if the animal can get near the edge, go over and hang itself. don't you have a friend who could take the dog to live with them while you are gone? possibly a kennel? i would have had a back up plan for events like this from the time i got the dog.

Well, I can not say that it will traumatize your dog or not. Dogs do adjust. For someone to say being tied out is bad. Well most dogs are tied out and most dogs do just fine. I would have a hard time adopting my dog out. But maybe that is something you would consider if you could find someone who can offer her more. What you are offering is not bad. But maybe to your dog she would like more attention and room to run.

That is NOT good. Is there anyone who can watch her? A friend who lives with parents who could stay on at your home for awhile? Can you pay the cost to take her on the trip?
