I would say it is neither a wasted prayer or a benefit to you. Like Garth Brooks says, "Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers." Remember that what you may want for yourself or for someone else may not always be what God has in mind for you or that person.

Rather praying for someone, the best thing is do what you can do to achieve your goal. Because it'll results at lest something towards your goal. Both praying and waiting till it answered is up to you. I don't like to make any comment bcs some religions base on praying it self.

if you pray for anyone its never a waste of time.
maybe the prayer wont be answered as fast or
as obvious as you wish. but its never a waste of time.
as far as it benifitting you, no one knows that answer.
but i would prefer to pray for others and just see what
happens. its easier on your soul that is for certain.
if someone is being mean to a friend of yours for example,
pray that there true colors show, then your friend can decide.
or if you pray that your sister dying doesnt suffer that God takes her to ease her pain, thats never selfish. every prayer benefits
the giver but it may not seem obvious.

In Islam, it does benefit both of you , you are rewarded for making prayers for other people..
Nothing is a "waste" when it comes to your relation with God "Allah".... Just every thing comes in its time!

You prayed to a powerful God. He knows the right way to answer that prayer.
Do not let your doubts take way the blessing that follows the prayer. God works in various ways.
Keep praying. Stay blessed

God answers all prayers, but he answers them in his time, not ours. He knows what is best for us and when we should receive what we have asked for. Often times we are confused about what it is that we are praying for, but God is never confused. He clearly understands what we need sand what it is that we would like him to do for us. He answers prayer accordingly.

Boy, I sure hope not because if so, I've wasted a lot of time in my life. I think there's more to it, yes, I think it benefits us , Go'd wisdom is way higher than ours. sometimes it's hard to understand in this life.
