Cheshire is very nice. The Cotswolds, Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Kent.... it depends what you like.
I also love the Lake District and The Borders.
I think one of the worst places to live would be Birmingham, seems a very dismal place. I go there for work sometimes, and it's mostly grey and the people are moody.

From the UK myself, from my experience the best area and nicest is Cornwall. Gets just about the best weather for UK, friendly locals, beautiful rugged coastline. Unfortunately houses there are very expensive.
Personally I gave up living in the UK disillusioned with the way the country is run, most areas getting worse by the year. I live in Indonesia now.
