it depends where`re u from...in Romania, where I`m form, u need a civil wedding 2 make it legal, and as far as i know u can`t even get married in a church before u had a civil wedding first. here a church wedding is more like tradition, ppl only have church weddings because it`s a custome and/or to get their marriage "legalized" by God, but if u don`t have a church wedding as well doesn`t make u less married than if u did...

I don't know anything about "symbolic" weddings, because I've never heard that terminology before. I know a civil ceremony means that your marriage is legal in the eyes of the law, but that it has no religious connection. As a fellow Catholic, I can tell you that your marriage will only be recognized and considered valid in the Church eye's, if your ceremony is performed by a priest inside a Catholic Church. The Catholic Church believes that marriage is very sacred; therefore, the only appropriate venue to have your ceremony is inside a Church. If you want to get married and then register as members of a new parish, you'll be unable to register as a married couple. Your marriage hasn't been blessed and confirmed by the church. You're free to marry in a civil ceremony and then have your marriage blessed later. But, you will still have to go through your marriage prep classes and probably pay the fees associated with filing the paperwork. You'll also have to stand before the priest, at the altar, and say your vows. If you want to pay for that, in addition to the destination wedding, then you're welcome to do that. But, on a personal level, I'd rather do it once and only once.

Technically, a Church wedding isn't legal unless the documentation is provided. And where does it come from? The county courthouse. A Church is just a venue by which a couple can get married, but technically, it is the law that joins them.

A church wedding takes place in the church.(Pastor, minister, reverend) And a civil wedding takes place in a court house, a friends home, etc.(judge, justice of peace, attorney,) anywhere but the church building. Both are meaningful, both are under the eyes of God, for God is everywhere. God bless****

A church ceremony is done in a church, by a priest...a civil ceremony is usually done outdoors or in a courthouse by a judge.
