hi,
a CAB file is a complressed cabinet file that containes one or more files.
It is used by things like windows and some cames to compress many files into one easily distributable one.
There is a cab extractor on the windows CD - check google for it - also you can use things like 7-zip, winzip and winrar to extract them
cheers

Hello,
CAB files or cabinet files, are a Microsoft proprietory file format which is used in the delivery of software i.e. applications. For example when I program is very large like windows itself, its often broken down into a number of different CAB files, those for drivers, those for fonts, those for cursors, those for device drivers and so forth.
**Some CAB files might contain other software or programs themselves.
**No! a game or program you've purchased could include several CAB files as part of its installation or setup routine.
**No! thats right you wont be able to open a CAB file in the normal scheme of things, because the CAB file is specific to a setup or installation routine, in otherwords its only openable as far as I am aware by the pre-programmed setup process. You cannot associate a CAB file with a program and just open it, it doesnt work that way I'm affraid.

I had a problem like this once. What it is is a file which programs use to read itself. These files are mostly used in installation processes. To access this kind of file can be a bit of a problem. There are two types of .cab file: one that needs to be extracted to read its contents, and one that is completely different and is just a different file type. You probably have the non-extractable type. If you have winzip or WinRar installed, these programs think that the .cab file needs to be extracted and so tries to...and fails. What you need to do is make sure it is opened with windows explorer.

You can get the latest version of Winrar here: http://bit.ly/1o0M15D
I like Winrar because it's a very good program to compress/decompress files in many different formats. You could also use other programs like 7zip or winzip for the same purpose but I think Winrar is the best option avalable. The funcionalities are pretty much the same for each program (you basically do everything with a simple right-click of your mouse) but Winrar is by far the best option.
The things I like about winrar is that it opens a bunch of compressed formats: .zip, .rar, .7z / 7zip, .iso, .tar, .jar etc. (much more than the other programs) and that it's 100% (trial period never expired so you can use it for free with no limitations)
These are the reasons why I recommend Winrar.

Hey,
If you are looking for a good program to open zipped files (compressed files) the best solution is WinRar.
You can find a recent release of Winrar here: http://j.mp/1p3PyRp

Don't fiddle with CAB files. I should uninstall & reinstall the game. Perhaps it's too much for your machine or, dare I say it, it's not a genuine version?

If you don't know what it is you really shouldn't be messing about with it.
Why do you want to go rooting around in CAB files anyway?
