an LCD teleision is a fixed pixel display, meaning all images are shown in it's native resolution. For High Definition the set needs to be capable of 720p or 1080i/p.

So just to keep it simple, you can't convert it. You can however, hook up a High Definition cable box or tuner, and watch High Definition channels. As mentioned above, the set will "down convert" the image to it's native resolution.

Keep the LCD panel you have now, but look for one capable of High Definition in the future

Possibly, you need to find out what exactly your LCD is capable of handling.

If you can find a high definition source with an hdmi/component output that matches the connections you do have on your LCD you will be able to watch unprotected/non-DRMed content at what sounds like close to the base HD resolution of 720 lines.

You problem in the future may be protected content. HD Ready requirements mean a display must be capable of decoding HDCP protected content usually sent via across an HDMI cable. So long as the content you want to watch isn't encrypted/protected you will be fine, but paranoid film studios are likely to want content like HD movies to be.

Exactly what connections do you have at the rear? Never heard of HDM... Do you mean HDMI? If you have DVI, you can get an adapter from HDMI to DVI, you'll just have to route the audio separately.
High Definition TV can be any of the following formats:
Component (Y, Pr, Pb)
DVI (Digital Video Interface)
HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface)
If you have any of those connections, you're good to go.
