I love the effects that the drug has had on the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder/Anxiety, and feel like I am back to my "old self" again. However, I am sweating constantly at work, and very embarrassing! Help!

Also, is there another comprable medication that does not cause nearly as much sweating or weight gain? I gained a tremendous amount of weight, 70 lbs., in the past year after starting this drug. I had NEVER been overweight before.
Thank you.

Weight gain is common with all Serotogenic antidepressants. From speaking with Dr's, patients and researching antidpressants, it's common for some Dr's to prescribe Wellbutrin to offset the side effects of Serotogenic drugs like Effexor. Wellbutrin is a chemical derivative of diethylpropion, which is used for weight loss. Wellbutring should not be used if you have a history of anorexia.

As per the excess sweating, the condition is called hyperhidrosis, which is the result of the over-stimulation of your sympathetic nervous system. This may be the result of Effexors reuptake effects to your norepinephrine.

The only remedy I've found for hyperhidrosis is a surgical procedure that involves entering the chest cavity and placing small clamps on the nerve responsible for sweating.

I imagine that you don't want to go this route, so I would suggest that you switch medications. Effexor is unique in how it works and the only other antidepressant that is somewhat similar is Cymbalta (duloxetine), which also works in modulating serotonin and norepinephrine. Cymbalta is new to the antidepressant world, so it's difficult to determine if you'll experience the same side effects.

I hope this helps.

What is Effexor?

Effexor (venlafaxine) is an antidepressant in a group of drugs called selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SSNRIs). Venlafaxine affects chemicals in the brain that may be unbalanced in people with depression.
Effexor is used to treat major depressive disorder, anxiety, and panic disorder.

I'm not aware of another drug, I've taken the same perscription as you and also had the sweats which is one of the side effects. I found that running my wrists under cold water pacifies it a little and after a shower, I run it cold (as cold as it gets) water gets and stay under it for as long as I can and it really makes me more comfortable. My sweating decreased because of this. Good Luck and sorry that your being subjected to the side effects!!
