Three men go into a restaurant, they have a lovely meal and the bill comes to £30.
They each pay £10.
The waiter realises he did the maths wrong and the bill is actually only £25.
The waiter goes back to the table but sneakily pockets £2 on the way.
He gives each man £1 back, so each man has now paid £9.
Three times £9 is £27, plus the £2 in the waiters pocket equals £29.
So where did the last £1 go?

sneakily pockets £2 on the way.

he would of had to of pocketed 3 dollars instead of 2. 30 - 2= 28 28/3 does not equal 9. the extra dollar is there. i think?!?

10+10+10=30 paid by the men
30-25=5 money that should have been refunded
5-2=3 money that was not stolen by the waiter
3-1-1-1=0 money after waiter giving out 1 to each
So the other 1 must have went towards:
TAXES or GRATUITY if one of the men were generous enough to give the waiter a tip after he screwed up the math.

just a play on the wording. Maths is Logic. the 3 men gave £10 and received £1 back so the meal actually cost them £27. The meal should have cost £25 so the waiter stole £27 minus £25 = £2

It is all in how the question is asked.
When the friends paid $10, they had paid $30in total.
When the Cashier gave $5 to the Waiter, the 3 friends had paid $25 to the Cashier and $5 to the Waiter.
When the Waiter returns $3, the 3 friends had paid $25 to the Cashier and $2 to the Waiter. $25+$2 = $27 = 3 x $9.

There's no missing dollar. The last part of the riddle was just to create a confusion. 1. $30 paid 2. $5 retured by clerk 3. $2 pocketed by bell-hop (5-2=$3) 4. $1 returned to each man (Total $3) 5. $9 spent by each man (Total $27) Each man paid $10 and got back $1. The bellhop pocketed $2. Total = 10 x 3 + 1 x 3 - (5 -2) = 30 + 3 -3 = 30

I posted the very same question last week !!!!!
In any even the answer is that the £2 the waiter stole is counted twice and the £3 the men got in change is not counded at all.
The meal did indeed cost £27 but that £27 included the £2 the waiter stole. What is not counted is the £3 the men got in change. So £27 plus £3 = £30.

Apparently this was used in a huge fraud case in the US a couple of years ago.
Everything you say is correct 3 x 9 is 27...well done.
Like someone else said the ACTUAL cost to the guys is $25, two guys pay 12, one guy pays 11. Then add the $3 the (3 x1) plus the $2 the store guy takes = $30

The last £1 didn't go any where. Each man paid £9 and each man got £1 change. Add it all together you will see it makes £30.
