The salt and lime are there to cover up the atrocious flavor of cheap tequila. Splurge a little bit and buy some good tequila... no need for the "training wheels".

Both are intended to make taking the shot easier.
Salt never really did anything for me but a lime after the shot does neutralize the burn.
