Both Plasma and LCDs are flat screen televisions. They use different technology but are continually getting closer to producing the exact same effect; A great Hi-Definition picture. Flat Screen itself isn't a technology, it's just a style and it's not to be confused with Flat Panel which is the general term people think of when they think Plasma and LCD. Flat screen just means the screen isn't curved. Depending on your needs one is better than the other. To keep it simple, go with LCD for 42" or less and Plasma for more than 42". Though, if you don't need the flat panel look and want the best bang for your buck, then get a DLP at any size. I won't get into details of the advantages or disadvantages of each. GIYF.

If you know the difference between plasma and LCD, you would know that they are both considered flat "panels". A flat screen however, is usually associated with the newer (post 2000 anyways) picture tube televisions that do not have any curvature in the face, which causes distorted images in the corners.
So,
Plasma = Flat Panel
LCD (backlit, not projection) = Flat Panel
CRT (newer ones) = Flat Screen

Flat screen just means that there is 0 degrees of deflection( curvature) of the viewing screen. While all LCD and Plasma TVs are flat, not all flat screens are LCD & Plasma screens. Te newest, and now obsolete, Cathoede tube screens are flat. Unless this style tv is fitted with a digital receptor annd is just a normal analog signal, it will be unable to view cable and network signal after 2009 when the analog signal is turned off forever. You can buy after market digital recievers or video equipment that recieves a digital picture and attach that to the older style analog tv's and still use them.

Both plasma and LCD are considered flat screen monitors---
the technology is different---the make up is different (but you evidently know this already)---------flat screen can be either---But LCD is far more previlent so more commonly-- when you hear someone refer to "flat screen" they will be refering to an LCD monitor !!
