The way your question reads, it seems that you want to upgrade 98. This is pointless, so please re-post to make it clear if that is what you really want, or did you actually mean that you want to upgrade TO XP etc

Buy a new one because if you are still using windows 98 then you will have a very old and slow computer, for example the CPU will be slow to load in applications and game playing wont be all that good, so it would be advisable to invest in a new PC and have everything you want updated, more "CPU speed", more "ram" better graphics, also a new operating system is going to be launched in January called Windows Vista, so it does not make much sense to upgrade at a time when it will be all change soon, at the moment we have Windows XP.
It would probably be cheaper in the long run as well instead of up grading an old computer and hoping that it will work as well as a new PC for it wont, don't forget that the hard drive has a working life of around six years and the same for the internal battery to maintain the time and date, all these issue have to be thought about, a new PC today are not that expensive around £350.00 to £500.00 should get you a nice one. good luck.

If you mean to upgrade from Windows 98 to XP or Vista which comes out in February, then as others have said your computer will probably not have enough resources to 'run' these operating systems.
If you mean upgrade Windows 98 to windows 98 SE, then that is not to difficult you just need to find a disk with 98SE on.

Keep in mind though Microsoft have stopped 'supporting' Windows 95, and its a fair bet that after the release of Vista the support for windows 98 will be withdrawn. Basically this means that Microsoft consider these systems so out of date that its not worth bothering sorting out any issues that may arise from your use of them.

unfortunately it looks like you need to upgrade, but prices are more competitive than when windows 98 came out.

First you need to find out if your computer is capable of handling the newer windows. It has windows 98 so it doesn’t sound like a very new one. If I were you then I would wait another month or so for the new windows vista to be released into the market but if you are in a rush then just get windows XP. If you have a decent nonage of computers then you can go bye it from the shops and install it yourself or you can do it the easy way and call a computer technician to do it for you. I recommend Gerry T Korrving to come and help you out. He is good with computers and doesn’t charge very much at all. His number is 0407453974.

If your PC will support Windows XP Pro/Home you can purchase the upgrade edition, this will cost less the the full version, but you need a qualifying underlying OS such as Windows 98.

You can go through to any reseller such as PC world and give them the following part numbers depending on which edition you require:

For Windows XP Pro UPG: E85-02681
For Windows XP Home UPG: N09-00983

If you want to upgrade to XP, then you'll need to purchase the Windows XP Upgrade version. Before you do this make sure you're system can handle it. How old is the computer? What is the processor speed? How much RAM do you have? These factors determine if you are even able to upgrade. If you provide further information I will be glad to assist you.

Run Upgrade advisor from the Microsoft website:

www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/upgrading/advisor.mspx

This will tell you what needs improving before installing XP

If it all goes well and your computer supports XP I would recommend you backup your files and do a new install as upgrading can clutter up your computer. You can then transfer your files onto the XP install.

Alternatively, depending on the size of your hard disk you could create a new partition and install XP on that partition and see how stable the installation is.

As you have not mentioned the type of hardware you are having, i assume that u are having an older version of hardware, so it might not support lattest version i.e, windows xp.

please evaluate the hardware you are having with the solutions yourself:
1) If you are using any model bellow Pentium 4, and less than 256 mb of RAM - then you are having a system where your hardware will not support newer version of operating system i.e., windows Xp or higher.
2) But if you are having a system that is Pentium 4 or higher with atleast 256 mb of Ram then you can opt for Windows Xp with service pack 2 as your operating system and office xp as your application software. you can get these software easily from the market.

You many have to look at what your PC is capable of. You may not be able to install the latest version of Windows if your PC doesnt have the hardware to support it. If you are nto sure, it may be easier to take the PC into a shop and get them to check if it can support XP

I'm sorry to say this, but you will most probably be needing a new copmuter first as a 98 computer might have a hard time running XP, or soon Vista.
