I've lived on a minimum of $700/month before when my portion of the rent was $400/month. That's really the lowest I could go and l live very cheaply. On average, most people I know seem to need about $2000/month but they also split the rent with someone. You can't really find an apartment that's under $1300/month anymore unless it's in a terrible neighborhood or on the far fringe of the city. If you live alone, it would be hard to have a normal life that includes going out on anything less than $2000/month. You won't be able to save much money either. You can get a 30-Day Unlimited Ride MetroCard for $76 and that covers your transportation costs each month.

*My electric bill seems to average about $70-80/month. I had my gas line disconnected so I don't pay a gas bill (I use an electric stove) My cell phone is $60/month. Heat/hot water is included in the rent. I have free wireless internet. I don't have cable TV. I split the electric bill with my roommate so my bills plus public transportation comes to about about $176/month. My portion of the rent was recently raised to $450/month (still ridiculously low). That leaves me less than $200/month for food and anything else I need. So, I'm staying alive on $800/month right now which is pretty much unheard of.

If you're making anymore than $2000/month, it depends on how much you are willing to pay for rent and how much money you blow on extra things like having a car, huge cell phone bills, going out all the time, cabs, etc. You can make $5000/month and still spend it all every month.

I live in a two bedroom apartment in Astoria with one roommate. I take home about $2550 a month- $1000 goes to rent, about $100 goes to cable and electric, $300-400 goes to food, $50 for my cell phone, and about $300 goes to my credit card bills.
