As was said the Jackson Pollock painting , #5,1948 fetching close to 140 million USD from David Geffen to David Martinez. #5 Was a relatively late in life painting by Pollock so imagine if a more well known piece had come up for auction. The highest price paid will continue to rise witht he quality art works being sold on the art market. The price of the Mona Lisa is priceless as are many other works of art. A price couldn not be attached to pieces such as the Sistine Chapel, David, Madonna of the rocks, or even a building like the Hagia Sohia. Their true selling price can never be known so it is unfair to include them in this discussin. The Scream by Munch was actually one of 4 different screams that munch created. Also the Getty has a large collection but is tiny when compared to the collection of say the Louvre, and at the rate that the Getty is being forced to compensate/return- stolen/looted/non-provenance work they really shouldn't be included in this category either.

The Mona Lisa and it is in the Louvre and The Scream by Munch and that is in Oslo in the Munch museum ...it was stolen a few years ago but obviously couldn't go on the open market to be sold ... then it was recovered . Getty museum so i suppose the Getty of the moment owns one of the most valuable private collections

The price of a painting always changes, so there is no 'set in stone' answer. Here's one I like better...

Your own/children's/friend's/etc. It's priceless. Hey, it's all in the eye of the beholder on that one. So, what's your answer?

I know, and I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you. Actually no one knows.
