A crack modifies a software, so it doesn't check for the copy protection anymore.
However, if an update tries to patch the cracked software, it fails, as the original has been modified.
Normally you copy the crack into the directory of the software you want to crack and run it. It will then find the files and remove the copy protection or other limitations.
A Keygen will generate working serial numbers, that you can enter into a software and it will accept them as genuine working keys.
If you just take a registration key, this single key can easily blacklisted to not work anymore if the software is updated.
