I had abdominal surgery (incision at bikini line) about 6 weeks ago. Last week I felt well enough to get out and do some holiday shopping at the mall. Well, as I was waiting in line, the woman in front of me swung her huge/heavy handbag around and slammed me right in the stomach area. She swung it around so hard I actually fell to the floor in pain. The people behind me all gasped and asked if I was ok, while the lady who hit me not only didnt say "are you ok" or "I'm sorry" she actually told me I was standing too close and it was "too bad for me." The store was very crowded, and I maintained as much personal space as was possible. Anyway, I ended up bleeding from the event, the incision which was well on it's way to being healed opened up and required 2 more superficial stiches. The more I think about it, I was assaulted. Of course it's too late now to do anything. If she had at least said "Im sorry" , I think I would have been ok with it. What should I have done.said?

Well, it's obvious there's nothing you could have done. You were too busy on the floor in pain. That cow doesn't have any manners.

I don't think that you should have done or said anything different from what you did do and say. Perhaps if you had the presence of mind you could have asked for her insurance information to pay for your medical expenses. But at the time I don't blame you for being much too busy to worry about that, and I don't think a rude retort would have been appropriate. I am so sorry that this happened to you, and I wish you a speedy recovery.

well it sounds like an accident and accidents do happen, although she was quite rude. when you hit hit floor you could have mentioned that you just had surgery, though that might have looked like you were soliciting attention. I would have atleast mentioned this ladies rudeness to her , some thing like " next time you go swinging your back around make an anouncement so every one can check their closeness" or something as simple as "wow how about some politeness and compassion in this holiday season?"

Sorry about that, MelB.

After you got up, you should have informed the woman that you got hit in the abdomen where you had surgery several weeks ago.

If the woman had an ounce of sense in her, she would apologize, but based on her reaction, she may not. In that case, if you really wanted her to believe in how much damage she caused, you could have shown her your bikini line wound. That might elicit apology from her. But then, why go down to her level?

i'm surprised you weren't more "protective" of your injured area....i don't think the woman did anything wrong (at least not in swinging her bag into you)...i think that was totally an accident.....she was incredibly rude implying you deserved to be injured though...i don't know that there is anything you could have done....and no, you weren't assaulted-it was an accident.....
hope you feel better soon

that is terrible, she should be totally ashamed of her actions.
I personally would have wanted to say something, but i would have been very much like yourself and think about it later, you did the right thing remember that. she is the one at fault, all you can do is try to forget it.

oh my gosh! she was so rude. you should've told her to apologize. wow i can't believe she would've been so insensitive and rude. you were not in the fauly here definately and if you know her you should take her to court. that's ridiculous that she would hit you and knock you on the floor and blame you.
