i think you should ask them. maybe they want money to help plan a honeymoon, or even pay for some of the wedding. don't assume that's what they want though, ask. it's also a good thing to offer help, such as setting up or cleaning up, those services cost money. if you can help them save money is good. if you give them money, make sure it is enough they can actually spend it on something or add to an account. not a 5 dollar check, or something from the dollar store, cuz hey, they're poor. if you decide to give them a gift, give them something they can use right away and lasts forever. like stone ware. or silver ware. or art work. maybe they need a microwave. bedding, towels, and bathroom supplies like bubble bath, shower thingies, bathrobes, towels, and the like. these won't last for ever, but can be used right away. wind chimes are a good one, no one else ever thinks of that one. you can get fancy or funky. make something home made NOT! what ever you decide, do it for them, don't try to impress, just concentrate on gifting.

Memories! Give them the gift of their memories from their Wedding day - a treasure that they will not forget, and will share with their children and grandchildren. Offer to do their photography or video, or even better, chip in together to purchase the video/ camera for them to use again after the wedding so that they can use it to capture future moments together! (Often that's all you have when you're poor)
Good luck and happy hunting!

I grew up in a poor family. the same things that matter most to rich people matter to poor people (i.e. family, memories, friends, love)
If you want to spend a little more time on this one you can gather up your photos, write up your story of how you met and got engaged and then publish it into a beautiful wedding memory book. iMemoryBook will do this for you.
My roommate is getting married this month and he is creating a wedding memory book for his fiance right now. He wrote his story of how they met and how they got engaged, then she wrote her story. Then Justin (my roommate) invited me, and all of his family and her family to the book to write their favorite memories about the two of them. When he is done, iMemoryBook will ship them a hardbound color copy of the wedding memory book.
My sister also just got engaged at Thanksgiving and is getting married in March. I have started a wedding memory book for her also. I know she is going to love it. These books are completely personalized from beginning to end.
You should gather up all your photos. Get each side of the story (they will never expect) and then give him a wedding memory book.
Good luck.

One thing I've done for my friends, whom which had never lived on their own before, as a wedding present was taken a laundry basket and fill it up with presents, every day items, they can use around the house. I put towels, wash clothes, sheets, utensils, a lot of little things that you can never have enough of. Made a wonderful present, and nothing was wasted.

i think you should ask them directly what they would like since they are close friends to you,you could offer to pay for the cake or some aspect of the wedding depending on how well off you are your self or you could just play safe and give them cash which they will need a lot of.both before and after the wedding day.
good luck

Money is the best gift.
If you don't want to do that and you have the money to spend then something nice for their home, like a new sofa or any other piece of furniture they might need.

A DVD player & a few romantic DVDs ... believe it or not, "Lady and the Tramp" is a romantic favorite - mostly because of the unforgettable spaghetti scene. You could also try to find romantic movies that kind of mirror their relationship / the way they met, etc.
A weekend get-a-way somewhere romantic. You could arrange to have flowers and champagne and / or a picnic basket waiting for them in their room. http://honeymoons.about.com/od/weekendgetaways/a/Romance_Weekend.htm
On the practical side : a microwave, or if they already have a microwave, consider getting them a George Foreman grill https://www.asseenontvnetwork.com/vcc/salton/foremangrill/280815/
Or perhaps, if you know the size of their bed and their color preferences, a "Bed in a Bag" set ... that would give them sheets, pillowcases & a comforter. http://www.homevisions.com/hvprod/prod_display1.asp?Product=65964&partner=16&clktru=1 http://www.topsearch10.com/search.php?aid=57158&q=bed+in+a+bag

please give some usefull things which can be used by the pairs in their married life. the showcase gifts nowadays are not usefull for the poor friends. the usefull things like iron box, coffee flask, some cell phones.etc. but all the things should be different from ohters. also it is usefull to remind u whenever they use ur things. so present these things and enjoy lot with ur friendship. GOOD LUCK

Cookware, furnishings, small appliances, stuff that they could use every day, yet nice enough that they will remember it years from now. Maybe you can get some friends and family together to help pay for the wedding photos....
