is it worth you spend have of your night in the emergency room b/c your asthmatic child had an attack due to the smoke?
i have asthma and really bad allergies (i take 2 medications daily for my asthma and 1 for my allergies) and i have a 7 year old daughter with asthma as well. just being around someone who smokes for longer than 5 minutes causes breathing complications for us both and it sometimes lasts for several hours even after using the medication.
don't put you or your child at risk. if this is your family-i'm sure they will understand (and if they don't-then maybe they should think twice about smoking in the house, especially if they want to see you and the kids).
call this person and explain to them your reason for not being there and suggest maybe another meeting place that is more suitable for you and your asthmatic child
good luck to you

We have many smokers in my family as well as a lot of kids, some with asthma... AND at no time does anyone smoke around them! We go outside or without! It is selfish to do otherwise! The same goes for not respecting the non-smoking adults.

You may not believe me but these are the facts.
(No I don't smoke)
If you (a non-smoker) live every day for 10 years or more with a smoker you stand a .00000428 chance of developing lung cancer! (A few days is not a risk)The risks of second hand smoke are drastically over-stated.
There are few legitimate concerns.
1) allergies/asthma. Many people are allergic to smoke, and it can be severe.
2) The impression it makes on the kids, you definately need to prep them ahead. If they ideolize their older cousin who smokes, it will effect them.

Sorry but theres no way I would take an asthmatic child into a smoke filled house. You say you dont want to upset anyone but at who's expense? Your childs?
I understand if you dont go everyone will be disappointed but Im wondering why the owners of the house cant ask people to smoke outside for the time your child is there?

Call your family members and explain that you and your kids have health problems and that going to their house could aggravate them. Invite your family to restaurant or even your house instead. I hope they will understand. Try something like, "I really want to see you for the holidays, but I'm concerned about my kids' asthma. Could we possibly meet somewhere else?" When they feel like you're trying to protect your kids instead of making a commentary on their smoking, they'll probably be more willing to accommodate.
Have a great holiday!
(Since you asked, I'm a nonsmoker.)

I am a amoker and when I have company that does not smoke I try to only smoke out on my balcony out of respect. You should talk to the hosts tell them due to the allergies and health of your children your afraid you will have to limit your visit to a certain time frame. Perhaps suggest that the smokers have a certain area to smoke away from the children. As they arrive explain this to them and hope they respect your wishes. Ask the host to only set out ashtrays in certain areas. If they love you they should understand. if they don;t, get in and out, and go home and enjoy your family in a smoke free environment.

I am an ex smoker and a mom.
If the house I was going to knew that I was not smoke-tolerant for whatever reason, they would either not invite me or care enough to accomodate me.
To be open and honest, I would tell the host the truth before your visit and see if you can come to a compromise.

Well since we have kids running around now that have asthma then the adults that smoke will go outside and smoke out there so that they aren't bothered by any of it.

ask your family to please smoke outside, however the smoke is probably reaking off the walls if they are heavy smokers.. sorry..My father is a heavy smoker and i know when I leave his house I reak of smoke on my clothes even if I was even there for less than hour.. Not because he was smkng just because it is in the air... I guess if it is infrequent with your children it wont hurt,, just dont make a practice of it.
good luck and Happy Holidays.
Jo :)

well do holidays on other place , or let the kids stay on the upper floor of the house either with close doors or AC or fan open.
best thing take those kids far to the place that they will not breathe any smoke in the area.
