The best time is 10 to 12 weeks, that gives it plenty of learning time from Mum and littermates. Any REPUTABLE breeder, whose interest is more than $$$$ supports this.

I have attatched a study that was done that explains socialization during this time, including how they learn and develop during this time. It's long, but worth the read.

Some say 8 weeks is fine. No earlier than that though as aggression problems can result. And the puppy could be subject to lifelong psychological issues. The ONLY exceptions ito this rule is if the breeder is not properly handling the puppies and socializing with them in addition to being with it's littermates. or UNLESS she isn't with a good breeder who is teaching them proper potty techniques and keeping their potty area clean, otherwise you could have to unlearn some of it's habits, as being kept in a dirty area will actually hinder potty training, as the pups natural instincts not to potty in it's living and bedding area can be hindered. But buying a dog from a improper breeder such as this should be avoided at all costs.

A lot of breeders of aggressive dogs purposely take them away sooner so they don't learn from Mum & littermates. They also don't learn how hard not to bite while playing and other socialization issues.

We have had dogs for 17 years, including showing, while we aren't anymore (raising kids is our priority right now!). I am currently training our Shih Tzu for therapy dog work. My mother passed away this summer after 5 weeks in a hospice, the dog therapy visits were good for both of us! :) Our pack currently happens to includes: Our four boys, our sharipie, our shih tzu and my sons American Pit Bull Terrier.

Puppies normally need 8 weeks with mother dog.
They gain valuable nutrients from mothers milk. IF the mother dog is not around or is un willing to nurse the pups you can go to the pet store for mothers milk supplement.
If at all possible then handle the pups as often and you can. This also helps the pups with trust and love. Most pups who are handles when newborns grow up to be better socialized to humans and other animals.

People who study the behavior and training of dogs recommend all pups stay with their Dams and littermates until an absolute minimum of 8 weeks of age.

While it used to be thought to be okay for pups to go to home at 6 weeks, current research and understanding has brought about new ways of thinking.

Never ever ever EVER before eight weeks. I don't care what the "breeder" above said. Six weeks may "be fine" but in terms of the dog's best interest and future development and behaviour, NEVER before eight weeks. Kudos to the poster who attached the study... A pup leaving the litter before eight weeks is missing out on crucial behavioural/development with its litter mates.

No earlier than 8 weeks old. They are still learning important social skills, such as bite inhibition from mom and siblings.

Dogs taken away to early can develop behavior problems later in life, such as seperation anxiety.

Not before 8 weeks but 12 weeks is ideal for socialization reasons and total weaning.

Breeder Here: 6 weeks in fine.... over eight you may have more of a problem with puppies not taking to the new food and water and crying at night.

usually at least 6-8 weeks. They should be weened by then and drinking at least water from a dish and eating soft food in small amounts. They cannot leave the mother until they can eat from other sources.
